Chapter Thirteen

Katie took a deep breath and hugged her file folder to her chest as she waited next to the executive elevator. She’d been dreading this appointment all day, but she’d come prepared.

She’d had no contact with Liam since he’d left for lunch and another appointment with the psychiatrist. After Dustin Gantt’s escape, Mr. Romo would be coming down hard on the recruits, but Liam had a plan in place. He’d told her nothing the psychiatrist did, including shooting him up with T-101, would have any effect on him.

The clip of Ginger’s heels echoed down the corridor as she approached the elevator. She pushed her glasses on top of her head as she drew next to Katie and flashed her badge to call the elevator car. Lifting one sculpted, carefully groomed eyebrow, she glanced at the file folder. “Fruitful afternoon?”

“Absolutely.” Katie raised her hand at a passing coworker from programming, but the person looked away and scurried past the elevator.

Word had gotten out. She’d been lumped in with Ginger Spann. Mr. Romo had plucked her from the obscurity of the worker bees and had elevated her to the secret society of executive elevators and private afternoon meetings. It’s what she’d hoped for, what she’d planned for once she figured out the lay of the land at Tempest, but it made her feel...unclean.

The doors whispered open, and Ginger gestured with her hand. “After you.”

Katie retreated to a corner of the elevator, still gripping her folder and staring at the lighted numbers even though they would make only one stop.

“You’re discreet, KC. I like that.” Ginger touched a finger to her lips and stretched them into one of her stingy smiles.

“I have to be discreet. If it gets around that I’m digging into employees’ computers, this operation would be a total failure.”

“You enjoy it, don’t you? You like the thrill of the forbidden.” Ginger crossed her arms and wedged a shoulder against the mirrored wall.

“I admit it.” Katie blew a lock of hair, which had escaped from her chignon, from her face. “I like solving other people’s puzzles. That’s what hacking is—solving a puzzle someone else put into place.”

“But those computer programs are supposed to be impenetrable for a reason. Face it. You love breaking the rules.” She shook a finger at her as the car landed on Mr. Romo’s private floor. “You naughty girl.”

“Rules are meant to be broken.” Katie tossed her head, and her loose bun came undone in a shower of bobby pins.

“Exactly.” Ginger’s eyes lit up and Katie relaxed her shoulders, knowing she’d given the appropriate response—one that Ginger had been waiting for from her, one that had solidified her membership in the covert triumvirate.

As Katie ducked to retrieve the pins on the floor of the elevator, Ginger placed the toe of her shoe over one of them. “Leave them. Mr. Romo will like your hair like that.”

Katie raised a flushed face to Ginger. “I—I don’t, I’m not...”

Ginger patted her hot cheek. “Oh, I know you’re not trying to seduce Mr.
